'The Untold Story'. 'In August 1971, many Protestants fled their homes as the IRA launched a bitter sectarian attack on Protestant communities throughout Belfast. The loyal people of Liverpool held out the hand of friendship in our hour of need. Up to 2000 terrified woman and children escaped from burning homes to live in the safety of Liverpool. That act of friendship by the people of Liverpool will never be forgotten. Liverpool ' Belfast, a bond never broken. No Surrender.' Central circular panel shows a Republican throwing a petrol bomb with a row of burning houses in the background. Three small children stand aboard the Ulster Queen. Belfast City Hall and the Liver Building flank either side with the Ulster and St George's flag. A handshake is drawn with excerpts from the Belfast Telegraph and Liverpool Echo described below. 'The first blanketman. Kieran 'Header' Nugent. 'The only way I'll wear a prison uniform is if they nail it to my back' ' Kieran Nugent 1976'. With a portrait of Kieran Nugent. Merlyn Rees, then Secretary of State, halted special category status in 1976. Nugent was the first Republican prisoner to refuse to wear the uniform and claimed political status. He wore his blanket from his cell. By 1978, around 300 prisoners had followed his lead. |

'Bodenstown' with portrait of Maire Drumm. ''Ni Siochain Gan Saoirse''.thinker and doer, dreamer of the immortal dream and doer of the immortal deed. We owe to this dead man more than we can ever repay him. To his teaching we owe it that there is such a thing as Irish Nationalism and to the memory of the deed he nerved his generation to do. To the memory of 1798 we owe it that there is any manhood left in Ireland-' P.H. Pearse'. Bust of Pearse and portrait of 'Maire Drumm, Vice President Sinn Féin, Bodenstown 1972. Assassinated by Loyalists 1976.' From Sutton, Maire Drumm was shot whilst a patient at the Mater Hospital, Belfast on 28th October 1976. |

'England √, Wales √, Scotland √, N of Ireland X' with a dustbin titled 'No.10 Downing Street' with a document entitled 'N. of Ireland Suicide Strategy ' URGENT'. Another reads 'For the attention of the Prime Minister. The facts of suicide do not cease to exist because they are ignored!'. A pile of papers sits beside the bin 'Newsweek. Frustrated Families Storm Meeting'. New mural lamenting the lack of a suicide strategy in Northern Ireland compared with the rest of Great Britain by the Beechmount Community Youth Project 05, supported by the Big Lottery Fund. Two scrolls read 'Families demand: Adequate funding for existing mental health projects, Long term support for those who have attempted suicide, Development of a 24/7 crisis response unit in West Belfast. Families demand: Suicide awareness training for Frontline medical/teaching staff, the development of a regional suicide prevention strategy, support for bereaved families in the aftermath of a suicide'. Countless personal tributes to suicide victims are scribbled on the space surrounding the mural. A list of those involved in the creation of the mural is also written. |

Celtic fans hold up boards reading '1994 ' 2004, over 4000 deaths in Ireland through Suicide', 'You'll Never Walk Alone', 'Tackle Suicide head On'. Advertising hoarding by the football pitch read 'Samaritans 08457 909090, Childline 08001111, NSPCC 08008005000, AICSC ' support the families bereaved through suicide, Women's Aid 90331818, 24 hour helpline 90565444, Lenadoon counseling 90600641'. New memorial garden and flagpoles in front of No.667, Album 20. A memorial stone has been placed. The UDA and UFF flags fly from the flagpoles whilst the Union Jack, Ulster and St. Andrew's flags fly above the mural. The mural is unchanged; Cuchulainn "Ancient defender of Ulster from Gael attacks" under a poppy with banners "Glencairn, Highfield, Springmartin. 'A' Coy West Belfast, Ulster's Defenders Past and Present". On one side, the Union Jack shield, "UDA Est. 1973" with illustrations of two towers, "Irish Tower, Messines, Belgium" and "Ulster Tower, Thiepval, France". On the other, UDA and UFF crests illustrating volunteers and a three man guard of honour beside a coffin draped in an Ulster flag. In front, the locked gates have UFF and UDA worked into them. |

'Collusion. A web of double agents, death squads and deceit' with a spider on its web. It's legs are labeled 'PSNI, RUC, Special branch, RHC, UFF, MI5, MI6, LVF, UDA, UDR, UVF'. The mural is fixed to the wall of Sinn Féin's headquarters at Connolly House. At the time this photograph was taken, Denis Donaldson had recently been expelled from Sinn Féin after admitting to being a British agent after being recruited by Special branch in the 1980s. He was found dead from shotgun wounds on the 4th April 2006 by his remote cottage near Glenties in Co. Donegal. |

Description: |
'Free Sean Kelly'. Large red lettering on the side of the bus depot. Sean Kelly was one of two IRA men involved in the planting of the bomb in Frizzell's fish shop on the Shankill road on 23rd October 1993, which killed 10 people (including Kelly's accomplice Thomas Begley). See No.2149, Album 62. Kelly was released under the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement but returned to jail when this license was suspended by then Northern Ireland secretary Peter Hain in June 2005. He was released around 6 weeks later on the eve of the IRA's statement on the ending of the armed campaign on 28th July 2005. See also No.2569 and No.2572, Album 73. |
