Description: |
Malcolm X mural painted by the American agitprop muralist Mike Alewitz (Labor Art and Mural Project, USA). Malcolm X (1925 - 1965) rose to prominence with the Nation of Islam in the 1960s, but left that organisation in 1964 to set up his own grouping. Three gunmen from the Nation of Islam assassinated Malcolm X at a speaking engagement in the Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom on February 21, 1965. He is buried at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. He was chosen as symbol for this mural as a leader of nationalism and as an internationalist. The mural also shows two buildings, one filling with protestors, and the other emptying as crowds of people stream out rejoicing. A white duck and white chicken are painted. The duck and chicken are based on parables used by Malcolm X. He would often say that you cannot expect a duck to lay goose eggs, (you cannot expect capitalism to provide racial equality and you cannot rely on politicians or political parties). The chicken relates to the Kennedy assassination as Malcolm X said it was a case of the chickens coming home to roost. The media furore led to Elijah Muhammed demanding he retract his remarks. Malcolm X refused and this led to the split from the Nation of Islam. Two Anti-War and Anti-Capitalist panels are drawn and described in No.1690 - 1691. A classic feature of Alewitz's labor and union murals is shown in the form of a black cat with an arched back. This is a Sabo-Tabby, an Industrial Workers of the World symbol for resistance to blind wage slavery. Malcom X quotation at the foot of the mural reads "We Declare Our Right on this Earth to be a Human Being, to be Respected as a Human Being, to be Given the Rights of a Human Being in this Society, on this Earth, in this Day, which We Intend to bring into Existence by Any Means Necessary". With thanks to Mike Alewitz and LAMP. |
