Description: |
Colour portrait of Joe Hughes sitting in his wheelchair, wearing an "Oxfam" armband, and clutching a collection tin. Other images include Joe Hughes at presentations and an investiture. Poem reads "I remember you Joe Hughes, jumping up and down in your chair, when the humour of your mind, flashed into your eyes, and the thump of your fist, rattled someone's shoulder blades. Oh! You're the smart one all right, hearing the grass growing, between the concrete slabs, under the wheels of your machine, urging the whole world on, with a passion beyond words. And all that chat about inclusion, you know what inclusion means. Takes someone like yourself, with experience of exclusion, to know what coming in is all about. How many times I've heard your laugh, slice clean through embarrassment, that awkwardness we sometimes carry, around our differences, with one wave of your legs ands arms, suddenly making clear, difference is the richness, of common humanity. What courage, determination, what consistency, integrity, intelligence, to enter in and make me realise, make anyone who's ever met you realise, the power, strength and goodness, the creativity, the ingenuity, the wit of being you'" (Brian Smeaton, December 7 1999). |
