Cuchulainn 'Ancient defender of Ulster from Gael attacks' under a poppy with banners 'Glencairn, Highfield, Springmartin. 'A' Coy West Belfast, Ulster's Defenders Past and Present'. On one side, the Union Jack shield, 'UDA Est. 1973' with illustrations of two towers, 'Irish Tower, Messines, Belgium' and 'Ulster Tower, Thiepval, France'. On the other, UDA and UFF crests illustrating volunteers and a three man guard of honour beside a coffin draped in an Ulster flag. In front, the locked gates have UFF and UDA worked into them. |

Description: |
Five photographic portraits mounted over the Irish tricolour, each with a name and the date when they died. Using the Sutton database, they are: 1. Edward Grant (died aged 18 on 24/12/73), an IRA volunteer who died along with 2 other people during a premature bomb explosion in Clarke's Bar, Monaghan Street, Newry 2. Michael Hughes (died aged 16 on 18/10/74), an IRA volunteer shot by the British Army during the attempted hijacking of a bus in Derrybeg, Newry 3. Pat Hughes (died aged 35 on 22/8/72), an IRA volunteer who died along with 8 other people in a premature bomb explosion at the Custom's Office, Newry 4. Brendan Watters (died aged 24 on 8/8/84), an IRA volunteer who died during a premature bomb explosion at a house in Barcroft Park, Newry 5. Colm Marks (died on 11/4/91) an IRA volunteer, shot by the RUC whilst preparing a mortar bomb in St. Patrick's Avenue in Downpatrick, Co. Down.. |
