Seminar: | Responding to Disappearance in Chile, Northern Ireland and Turkey |
Description: | This seminar is hosted by Conflict Textiles Trust in collaboration with INCORE, TJI and the John Hume & Thomas P. O'Neill Chair in Peace at Ulster University. It will feature inputs and reflections from Professor Cath Collins (Ulster University) and Dr Lauren Dempster (School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast) on efforts to recover the disappeared in Chile and Northern Ireland respectively. Dr Nisan Alici (School of Law, QUB) will present on the experience of the Saturday Mothers/People campaign in Turkey.
It coincides with the installation of the Conflict Textiles curated exhibition Conflict Textiles / Ulster University, Belfast - The search for the disappeared at the new Ulster University Belfast Campus library. The textiles on display (Nuestros/as desaparecidos/as / Our Disappeared, Homenaje a los caídos / Homage to the fallen ones, No a la impunidad 2 / No to Impunity 2 and Reflections on violence) depict human rights abuses and the impacts of enforced disappearance; systematic practices under General Pinochet’s regime which seized power in Chile in September 1973 - 50 years ago.
