Description: | In this arpillera, dominated by black, the sun is absent and the Andes are in monotone. In the background, villagers, unable to pay for electricity, tap into the main power supply. The road is lined with candles in remembrance of the disappeared. One person carries leaflets protesting against torture. Some women lie on the road, resolute in their quest of denouncing torture and disappearance and demanding truth. Overall, we are confronted with a multitude of sombre images; grim reminders of the far reaching consequences of the Pinochet dictatorship.
Based on direct testimonies, Elizabeth Lira, in Mujeres Historias chilenas del siglo XX, (Chile, LOM Ediciones, April 2011) describes the relentless struggle of families of the disappeared in Chile, a struggle echoed in many other situations of conflict: “[They] … have kept their pleas demanding to know what happened, … placing in the centre of their lives the activities of denouncing and looking for their missing relative, hoping to find them alive. Hope is the fuel of their search that does not end.” |
