Film launch:International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances 2022
Description: Ulster Museum in collaboration with Conflict Textiles is hosting an event to mark the annual International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, 30 August 2022.

The event incorporates several components:
1. Two short films will be screened. The first film Following the Footsteps of the Disappeared 2021, 30 August 2021 (13.04 min) was commissioned by Ulster Museum. It documents the launch of the exhibition Following the Footsteps of the Disappeared 2021 in the Troubles and Beyond exhibition space, which explored transnational experiences of enforced disappearances. The second film “Scraps of Life” (29 min) by Gayla Jamison tells the history of Chilean women gathering together to document their lived experiences of the Pinochet dictatorship through arpilleras and to campaign for truth and justice for their disappeared relatives.

2. Chilean arpillerista Pamela Luque, whose experience is documented in the first film, will discuss her work as an arpillerista with reference to her arpillera Paro de los estudiantes' chilenos 2 / Chilean students' strike 2 on display in the Troubles and Beyond exhibition space. She will also give a musical performance linked to the arpillera La cueca sola / Dancing cueca alone

3. Textiles from Conflict Textiles collection on display in both the Troubles and Beyond and Inclusive Global Histories exhibitions at the Ulster Museum will be available to view and engage with.

Commissioned by: Conflict Textiles & Ulster Museum
Date(s): 30th August 2022 - 30th August 2022
Venue: Ulster Museum Belfast
Botanic Gardens, Belfast BT9 5AB, Northern Ireland
Curator: Roberta Bacic and Karen Logan
Facilitator: Ulster Museum
Outcome: Over 40 people from a range of disciplines and communities - local and further afield - attended this event. The synergy of films, guided tours, arpillerista input and musical performance gave a deep insight into the families of the disappeared's search for truth and justice and prompted much discussion. It also provided a space to renew and deepen face to face connections and collaborations, the absence of which was keenly felt during the Covid 19 pandemic. "A very mature event, woven together and profound, more than collaboration, interconnection" was the reflection of one participant.
