Description:

This piece was acquired at the Vicaría de la Solidaridad by Robert Miller when he visited Chile in the early 1990s. He later wrote a paper on Chilean Women's Resistance which gives an account of what he saw and experienced while there.

The arpillera on display opens a window into the life of a poor shantytown in the suburbs of Santiago in the 1980s. Affected by pollution and the fumes of cars and public transport, the community is taking action. Some are denouncing the situation through a banner that reads: 'No more smog'. Some of the women are covering their mouths and noses with a mask.

The piece mirrors the present global concern about pollution, environmental destruction and climate change, articulated at the COP28 Conference (December 2023). Overall, it reflects a community united against the odds.
