Exhibition and associated activities:COSIENDO PAZ: Conflicto, Arpilleras, Memoria / STITCHING PEACE: Conflict, Arpilleras, Memory
Description: This exhibition of arpilleras and other textiles has been commissioned by three Basque Country organisations: Fundación Museo de la Paz de Gernika, La Fundación Boinas La Encartada Kultur Ingurunea Balmaseda, Spain and La Casa de la Paz y los Derechos Humanos de Aiete, Donostia. It is hosted by Área de Derechos Humanos del Ayuntamiento de Donostia/San Sebastián / Human Rights programme of Donostia/San Sebastian City Council.

This is the last and final stage of the present exhibition in the context of San Sebastian having been chosen as the European Capital of Culture 2016. This candidacy is shared with the Polish City of Wroclaw.

A programme of associated activities has been put in place connected to this exhibition.
Commissioned by: Three Basque Country organisations
    Date(s): 13th April 2016 - 12th June 2016
Venue: House of Peace and Human Rights, San Sebastian, Spain
    Aiete Palace, Paseo de Aiete 65, 20009 San Sebastián, Spain. Phone: (00 34) 943 48 19 75
Curator: Roberta Bacic, curator; Breege Doherty, assistant curator
Facilitator: House of Peace and Human Rights staff and associated groups and organizations
Outcome: On the 14th June 2016, two arpilleras, made as part of the associated programme of the exhibition, were unveiled at Centro Zarategi de Atención integral a Personas en Situación de Riesgo o en Exclusión Social de Cruz Roja en Gipuzkoa (Zarategi Center of Comprehensive Care for People at Risk or in Social Exclusion of Red Cross in Gipuzkoa).

It was a powerful experience as it was the culmination of the outreach programme with vulnerable, targeted participants who attended the Red Cross and who have enjoyed the potential of arpillera language. This arpillera work is continuing and has been embraced by the Red Cross facilitators. (A report on the event is available in the documents section below – Unveiling of arpilleras, June 2016, Gipuzkoa).

The two arpilleras will be displayed until the end of the year, afterwards moving to become part of the exhibition “The Artivist Sailing” which will take place at the Gernika Peace Museum.

Both arpilleras “Arpillera Familia del Mundo / Arpillera Family of the World” and “Arpillera Sin Título / Arpillera without a Title” together with their accompanying narratives are included in the documents section below:
(Outcome: Arpillera Familia del Mundo) and (Outcome: Arpillera Sin Título)

This final event marked the ending of the three exhibitions that toured three Basque Country venues beginning in March 2015.
