This arpillera made by Angela and her daughter, uncovers the stories she heard from her parents about the Spanish Civil War in her home town of Extremadura, in south-west Spain (1936-1939). Through the arpillera process, Angela - 72 years old when creating this piece - enables her daughter and future generations to better understand this violent period of Spanish history which has not been widely acknowledged.

She remembers: “The truck travelling along the road is carrying men on their way to be executed. The crosses show the graves where they were buried. When the men were rounded up and put on trucks, the women would come against the odds to say goodbye …in tears because they knew they would never see them again.”

The Spanish Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica (ARMH) / Association for the Historical Memory Recovery estimates that there are 113,000 people who are still in unidentified mass graves.
