This arpillera was made a year before the end of the 17 year Pinochet dictatorship. Here, the anonymous arpillerista graphically depicts the shocked workers at the Comandari textile factory on the outskirts of Santiago watching the military planes overhead as they bomb the National Palace, La Moneda, the government headquarters, in Santiago, on 11 September 1973.

This key event deposed the democratically elected socialist government of President Salvador Allende, inaugurated in 1970. Through her arpillera bearing the stitched words: “Hay Golpe de Estado 11-09-1973” this arpillerista ensures that this event will not be forgotten.
