Ingram, Adam (b. 1 February 1947)
Politician; Labour Party MP; Minister of State at Northern Ireland Office (NIO) 1997-2001
Adam Ingram was born in Glasgow and educated in the city before returning to education through the Open University. He worked as a computer programmer / analyst (1967-77) before taking up a post as a full-time trade union official (1977-87). Ingram first became involved in politics when he joined the Labour Party and served as a local councillor (1990-87) before being returned as an MP in 1987 for the constituency of East Kilbride (1987-present). With the return of a Labour government following the general election of May 1997 he was appointed Minister of State at the Northern Ireland (NIO) (1997-2001). His responsibilities were to include those for security, prisons and economic development and in March 1998 he was made Minister for Victims. After a cabinet reshuffle in early 2001 he was moved from the NIO and took up a junior position at the Ministry of Defence.
