Description: | The Mapuche are an indigenous people in South-Central Chile and South -western Argentina with a textile tradition that stretches back hundreds of years and passes down from one generation to the next. This piece reflects the people's strong sense of cultural identity through their textiles, garments, musical instruments (cultrún and trutruca), jewellery and the home (ruca). Theirs is an identity under threat in a world that often destroys such small ethnic groups with overpowering westernisation. This piece reflects the Mapuche dream and need for a peaceful existence as a people in their own right. |
