  Information on photograph displayed above
  Title: Dún an Óir (1)
Location: Smerwick Harbour, Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, Republic of Ireland.
Description: The photograph is of a monument that stands in the 'Field of the Heads' (Gort na gCrann) next to Dún an Óir, on the west side of Smerwick Harbour on the Dingle peninsula in County Kerry. The monument refers to the massacre of approximately 600 men and women in 1580.
Six ships, carrying 600 to 700 Spanish, Italian and Irish soldiers, had left Santander in Spain and sailed for Dingle. The force was a response by the Pope and the King of Spain to a request for military aid from the rebelling Earl of Desmond and his Gaelic followers. When the force landed at Smerwick Harbour it was quickly beseiged by English forces and the Spanish commander, Sebastiano di san Giuseppe, surrendered after three days on 10 October 1580. On the same day the English commander, Lord Grey of Wilton, put all 600 of the garrison to death. They were beheaded and their bodies thrown into the sea.
