| Exhibition, Q&A session and film screening: | Human Rights through textile language: The Oxford Human Rights Festival |
| Description: | The Oxford Human Rights Festival (11 – 20th March 2022), founded in 2003, is an initiative of post graduate students on the MA course in Development and Emergency Practice at the Centre of Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP), Oxford Brookes University. The festival aims to raise awareness about a range of human rights concerns among Oxford Brookes students and the wider Oxford community through the arts, which include film, performance, talks, workshops, and exhibitions.
Conflict Textiles contribution to the festival is titled “Human Rights through textile language”. It incorporates a conversation and in depth discussion of six arpilleras related to the festival theme for 2022 “Movement”.
Through these textiles, which express living experiences that often cannot be articulated in words and which embody the voices of those who engage in the search for the disappeared, Conflict Textiles will explore movement, testimony and resistance.
For the duration of the festival, images of the textiles will be displayed in book cabinets at Wolfson College.

| Outcome: | The three-way conversation/dialogue took place between forensic anthropologists Shari Eppel, Zimbabwe; Nicholas Marquez, England and Roberta Bacic, Conflict Textiles curator. It complemented and gave depth to the exhibition of high resolution arpillera images. Participants had an opportunity to listen, engage in the issues and interrogate the sharing of experiences and expertise of the three presenters.
Conflict Textiles very much valued participating in this event organised by young professionals tapping into our accumulated experience.
There was a low attendance, suggesting that future events could benefit from a greater focus on outreach at an earlier stage. |
