Workshops (online):The Art of the Banner
Description: Making the Future is a cross-border cultural programme which empowers people to use museum collections and archives to explore the past and create a powerful vision for future change. It is implemented by Linen Hall Library, Nerve Centre, National Museums NI and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland – (PRONI), supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV programme.

The Art of the Banner is a five week programme hosted by Linen Hall Library’s Making the Future Project.
In this series of creative workshops, led by Conflict Textiles curator Roberta Bacic, you will have the opportunity to explore the skills involved in creating a protest banner, the messages they convey and how the protest banner is as relevant today as it was for our past generations. The programme will also explore the history of Orange Order, Hibernian and Trade Union banners with historian and guide Paul Donnelly from Dead Centre Tours.

You will also get the chance to create your own ‘conflict textile’ with textile artist Deborah Stockdale and have it featured on the Making the Future websites and the CAIN Conflict Textiles Archive.

Outcome: The programme explored conflict textiles around the world, protest placards, as well as parade and trade union banners in Northern Ireland. The workshops were led by Roberta Bacic from Conflict Textiles, textile artist Deborah Stockdale, DC Tours guide Paul Donnelly and Making the Future Engagement Officer and artist Lesley Cherry. Working through a process of examining the messages these banners have had over the years, learning the skills involved in making them, participants then created their own ‘conflict textile’ (see ‘Outcome of workshops, April 2021’ in Documents section below).
