Description: | The “Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women” exhibition trail, commencing at the Tower Museum, brings together many threads of connection. It marks the 15th anniversary of Conflict Textiles inaugural exhibition The Politics of Chilean Arpilleras (8th February 2008 - 19th April 2008) at what was Derry City Council's Harbour Museum. This exhibition paved the way for several collaborations with the Tower Museum.
“Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women” builds on a ten year plus collaborative relationship with Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc and adds a new dimension to their Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc exhibition Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women (Badalona, 2019).
Through a selection of arpilleras from the Conflict Textiles and Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc collections, we are introduced to disruptive women worldwide: women who have pushed the boundaries of societal expectations; women who have broken the mould; women who have challenged and denounced violence and human rights abuses; women who have supported each other in their demands for justice and fairness.
The Tower Museum display features archive material from the many exhibition programmes delivered in partnership with Conflict Textiles and a chilean arpillera ‘Homenaje a los caídos / Homage to the fallen ones’ (c.1976), displayed in the 'The Politics of Chilean Arpilleras’, (2008).
It also signposts the exhibition across three venues:
-Flowerfield Arts Centre, the location for Arpilleras that Cry Out (2009).
-Conflict Textiles collection: Magee Campus Library, Ulster University
-The Troubles and Beyond in Ulster Museum.

Commissioned by: | Derry City & Strabane District Council - Tower Museum |
Date(s): | 8th February 2023 - 7th August 2023 |
Venue: | Tower Museum, Derry / Londonderry, Northern Ireland Union Hall Place, Derry, BT48 6AF |
Curator: | Roberta Bacic assisted by Breege Doherty |
Facilitator: | Bernadette Walsh, Archivist |
Outcome: | The Chilian arpillera alongside the archive materials was a popular exhibit and we were very fortunate to link once again with the Conflict Textiles team, and NMNI, on promoting this very important collection.
The theme of ‘Disruptive Women’ also, in many ways, linked with current Museum projects which are focused on a number of themes – empowering and influential women - from Derry shirt factory women, NI peace heroines and of course the TV series the Derry Girls |
