Rotating exhibition:The Troubles and Beyond: Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women
Description: Textiles from the international Conflict Textiles collection are an integral element within the "The Troubles and Beyond" exhibition and are rotated on an annual basis. This collaboration commenced with an Arpillera Doll Making Workshop in 2017 and has since led to the creative exchange of objects and ideas.

The 2023 installation features a selection of textiles from the exhibition "Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women", which marks the 15th anniversary of Conflict Textiles inaugural exhibition The Politics of Chilean Arpilleras (2008). It builds on a ten year plus collaborative relationship with Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc. “Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women” is the second co-curated exhibition and adds a new dimension to the Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc exhibition Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women (Badalona, 2019).

The exhibition trail, which is announced in the Tower Museum with a display of archive material and an arpillera, takes place across three venues:
-Flowerfield Arts Centre will feature the bulk of the Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women exhibition.
-Conflict Textiles collection: Magee Campus Library, Ulster University.
-“The Troubles and Beyond” exhibition space.

Textiles from Conflict Textiles collection are linked in the 'Textiles displayed' section below. Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc textiles can be viewed at the following links (Catalan): They Shall not Pass! and 8th of March.

A hands on textile workshop, facilitated by arpilleristas Pilar and Manoli from the Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc, Badalona, takes place on Wednesday 26 April, 2 - 4.30pm in Room 02/011 in the Peter Frogatt Centre in Queen’s University Belfast (Further details available here).

(Details of the inaugural and subsequent exhibitions are available at The Troubles and Beyond 30 March 2018 – 30 March 2019).

Commissioned by: Ulster Museum, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Date(s): 8th February 2023 - 13th August 2023
Venue: Ulster Museum, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, Belfast BT9 5AB, Northern Ireland
Curator: Karen Logan
Facilitator: Roberta Bacic and Karen Logan
Outcome: The 'Mujeres Disruptivas / Disruptive Women' display had a different style and was popular with visitors, consciously disruptive in the inclusion of small dolls as characters through the display, it explored important themes of human rights abuses and enforced disappearance and enabled visitors to examine women’s history through a different lens. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to invite arpilleristas Manoli and Pilar from the Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc group to facilitate a textile workshop and this provided a forum for a diverse group of people to come together and share their experiences in a meaningful way.
