Description: |
The thumbnail photographs below provide links to large versions which show part of the Apprentice Boys of Derry 'Lundy Parade' which took place on Saturday 1 December 2007. The parade was the main part of the celebrations to mark the 319th Anniversary of the Shutting of the Gates. This refers to the time when the Protestant citizens of the walled city of Derry refused to hand the city over to troops loyal to James II and a siege began in December 1688.
There were four parades on Saturday 1 December 2007. At 11.30 there was a parade of 'visiting Clubs' from the Waterside Railway Station through the city centre to the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall in Society Street. This was followed by the main parade at 13.15 from Society Street via the city centre to the grounds of St. Columb's Cathedral. After a Service of Thanksgiving the parade reformed at 15.00 and returned through the city centre to the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall in Society Street. The final parade happened at 16.00 when visiting Clubs returned to the Waterside via the city centre.
The photographs below were taken during the main parade as it moved down Bishop Street Within and passed around The Diamond. The parade was made up of members of the Associated Clubs of the Apprentice Boys of Derry together with Loyalist bands which were invited to take part. The Apprentice Boys wore collarettes or sashes which indicated which Club they belonged to.
