Book Launch, Guided tour and Associated activities: | Conflict Textiles: Poetry & Arpilleras Book Launch And Exhibition Tour |
Description: | The book, Arpilleras Poéticas, was published and launched in Chile in December 2023 at the National Museum of Arts to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1973 coup. Arpilleras Poéticas brings Latin American poetry into dialogue with textile art from around the world that focuses on elements of conflict and human rights abuses. We will continue that dialogue, with readings of translations of Latin American poetry alongside work on the theme of conflict by poets from the North of Ireland, and a tour of the exhibition with accompanying commentary by its curator.
The event will interweave the threads and languages of textile art and poetry to honour all the artists and writers whose work pulls back a curtain to show us the lived experience of conflict across the world.
The event will occur from 3 to 4.30 in the Ulster Museum.
Participant poets on the occasion: Lorna Shaughnessy, Damian Gorman & Esther Pardo
Native language poetry readers: Patrick Corrigan, Victor Henriquez, Pamela Luque, Helen Maguire & Roberta Bacic

This quote, from one of the many messages we have received, summarizes the gathering.
“It is great to see the exhibition and the book getting such deserved appreciation. The launch was wonderful, you have done such important work in bringing the Arpilleras and the poems together, and the readings were so moving - and beautifully presented. I’ve been encouraging friends to go along to the museum to see the Arpilleras, and I know everyone who sees them is deeply impressed, and educated by their stories. Thank you for inviting me to the launch, many congratulations on the achievement”. |
