Exhibition: | Textile Installation on Afghanistan |
Description: | The central feature of this installation uses textiles made by women from Afghanistan, incorporated in a piece by class 6c from the Hauptschule Kiderlinstraße, Germany, completed under the guidance of textile artist, Heidi Drahota. The seeds for this connection were sown when Heidi brought her students to the exhibition "Threads of destiny: Testimonies of violence, hope and survival" in Fürth, Germany in 2009. There, they gained an insight into the Afghanistan/Germany embroidery project, started by Pascale Goldenberg and embarked on a connection that was mutually beneficial for both the Afghan and German girls.
This exhibition was part of a continuous series of arpillera and quilt exhibitions hosted by the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry and curated by Roberta Bacic, from 2008 to 2013. Each exhibition, comprised of a piece or pieces created by community groups from different parts of the island, other countries, or individual women, was displayed for a number of weeks before being replaced with a new exhibition. |
