Description: | This collective piece was made during a workshop which was part of the International Arpillera's Forum, 2016. Participants had a choice of two workshops, this one titled “Identifying with refugees”. As participants came from many different countries, textile was the common language. Somehow, the women transcended language barriers and created this arpillera, welcoming refugees. Foremost in their minds was the memory of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned on 2nd September 2015 in the Mediterranean Sea, en route to Europe with his family.
Here we see a diverse group of people on the shore welcoming the newcomers. This conveys the image of Gernika as a place where people of diverse cultures and backgrounds live together.
