| Exhibition and associated activities: | Light during the darkness: Remembering the Holocaust |
| Description: | Holocaust Memorial Day Trust offers the theme of “Be the light in the darkness” to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2021. This encourages audiences to reflect on the darkness of the Holocaust and the ways individuals and communities resisted and continue to challenge the darkness of genocide and shine a light on situations where people are persecuted.
This exhibition “Light during the darkness: Remembering the Holocaust” features an array of objects including textile artworks, memorabilia, photos and items from the Conflict Textiles collection and other contributors.
Each weekday, from Monday 18 January - Monday 1 February, an exhibition item was featured on the Linen Hall Library online platforms, with details of its history. This video (2.12 minutes) is a compilation of the exhibition images.
An online event, marking Holocaust Memorial Day 2021,takes place on 27th January, 2-3.30pm (GMT). This event will feature inputs from a transnational panel of contributors on Holocaust-related family memorabilia; an heirloom / memorabilia which has shone a light into the darkness. A short film Light during the darkness: Remembering the Holocaust (14 minutes), shares stories on the exhibition textiles and memorabilia and introduces the event contributors.
This short film Light during the darkness: Remembering the Holocaust’ Part 2: Online Event (14 minutes), is an edited version of the zoom event on the day. It focuses on the five contributors narratives to the online event.
Roberta Bacic, Conflict Textiles Curator, reflecting on the event, notes that: “In times of darkness, some bright light always squeezes through. So do memories. As we mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2021, we value our contributors from three different continents who will bring to life people and memorabilia that bear witness to those who suffered in different ways and/or resisted the Nazi regime”.

| Outcome: | Northern Ireland's Linen Hall Library partnered with Conflict Textiles to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2021. An online exhibition was produced and posted on the organisations' social media channels achieving a potential viewership in the tens of thousands. In addition, an online event was organised featuring a transnational panel of contributors relaying personal stories about Holocaust-related family memorabilia; this attracted a worldwide audience of around 100. Also produced were three videos highlighting the items from the exhibition and the contributors from the online event. This successful collaboration enhanced an already established bond between the two organisations and anticipated future shared projects. |
