Description:

From the military coup of 1970 to the 1988 plebiscite that brought an end to the Pinochet dictatorship, Chile lived during a time when thousands were imprisoned, tortured and killed and oppressive laws forbade protest and acts of subversion as defined by the rulers.

This arpillera is from the post Pinochet era. With its colourful depiction of Chile's flowers, resources and landmarks, it expresses the rich heritage of the country, which can be preserved and nurtured in peaceful times. It was given as a gift to curator Roberta Bacic, originally from Chile, to bring her native land back to her European home in Northern Ireland.
