Materials: | Repurposed Japanese silk fabrics, Clark’s of Upperlands linens with printed cotton, calico and polyester wadding layers. Glass bead decoration. Hand stamped and hand stitched with seed stitches and back stitches and finished by machine. |

Description: | Conflict Textiles commissioned this textile portrait of Irene MacWilliam to coincide with the exhibition Threads of Empowerment: Conflict Textiles’ International Journey at the Ulster Museum. It will be shown in The Troubles and Beyond exhibition together with Irene’s landmark piece Peace Quilt - Common Loss.
Through it we gain an insight into her work as a textile artist and the breadth and depth of issues she highlighted through textile language over several decades; the Northern Ireland conflict, the environment, displacement, disappearance, the impact of war on children and non violence. |
