| Exhibition and associated activities: | Arpilleras: Community Action and Empowerment through Narrative Textile Art: An exhibition of arpilleras illustrating aspects of daily life including traumatic and healing events, from Chile, Peru, England, Germany, Ireland and Northern Ireland |
| Description: | This exhibition of arpilleras from Chile, Peru, England, Germany and Northern Ireland, illustrating both truamatic and healing events, is testimony to the tenacity and strength of women in their brave struggle for truth and justice, particularly in Chile.
It is complemented by:
1)A pre exhibition talk, "ARPILLERAS: Fabric Art of Memory and Protest" - An Evening with Roberta Bacic, in conversation with Joseph Eldridge; 4 March 2012, 7-8:30 pm, Abramson Family Founders Room, School for International Service, American University
2)An experiential, pre-exhibition workshop: "Stitching the Truth: the Resistance Art of Arpilleras", 5 March 2012, 4-5:30 pm; Eastern High School, 1700 East Capital St NE, Washington DC.

| Outcome: | Several participants have taken on board making arpilleras, with one being completed on the theme of September 11, which will form part of an exhibition in Argentina. An arpillera has also been completed on the theme of the death penalty in the USA, focusing particularly on Troy Davis who has since been executed. Overall, this exhibition has acted as a catalyst for the depiction of current burning issues in the USA through the medium of textiles.
