Exhibition: | Rathlin Reflections: threads from an Island home |
Description: | Nearly 20 years ago a group of Rathlin Island women gathered to piece together their stories of Island life. These stories were transformed into a beautiful 16 panel quilt which resided in the Islands Boathouse Museum. In 2010, a group of Rathlin women, under the umbrella of the Rathlin Development and Community Association (RDCA) gathered again to continue the story. Supported by Roberta Bacic, they created a number of new textile panels. The installation, Rathlin Reflections, centred around the womens first Boathouse Quilt, and included the new arpillera as well as artistic creations from Rathlin children and other artistic expressions.
This installation was part of a continuous series of arpillera and quilt exhibitions hosted by the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry and curated by Roberta Bacic, from 2008 to 2013. Each exhibition, comprised of a piece or pieces created by community groups from different parts of the island, other countries, or individual women, was displayed for a number of weeks before being replaced with a new exhibition. |
