Religion in Northern Ireland

Summary

  • The main religious denominations in Northern Ireland are;
    • Catholic
    • Church of Ireland
    • Presbyterian
    • Free Presbyterian
    • Methodist
    • Baptist
    • Brethren
  • The 1991 census returns showed that 84 per cent of people were members of one of the main Christian denominations. 11 per cent of people either refused to answer the question on religion or gave their religion as 'none'. The first table below gives a summary breakdown of the responses to the religion question. The figure of 84 per cent in Northern Ireland is significantly higher than the 56 per cent of people in Britain who consider themselves to belong to a Christian denomination.
  • People in Northern Ireland are also more frequent attenders at church than those in the UK. More than 50 per cent in Northern Ireland are churchgoers compared with 15 per cent in the rest of the UK. Furthermore, women in Northern Ireland are more frequent churchgoers than men, with 61 per cent of women attending church frequently, compared with just 39 per cent men.
  • A survey carried out in 1993 by the Northern Ireland Social Attitudes Survey showed that, 77 per cent of marriages in Northern Ireland are to partners of the same religion, compared with only 55 per cent in Britain.
  • As in most other societies a person's religion in Northern Ireland is largely determined by the religion of their parents. Whilst in Britain, the membership of churches is ageing, this is not the case in Northern Ireland where the churchgoing population is actually getting younger.
  • In a survey carried out in 1995 by the Northern Ireland Social Attitudes Survey, 90 per cent of Protestants opted to remain part of the UK, compared to just 24 per cent of Catholics, while 60 per cent of Catholics were in favour of the reunification of Ireland.
  • On the question of constitutional identity in Northern Ireland, 76 per cent of Protestants consider themselves to be Unionists, while 54 per cent of Catholics consider themselves to be Nationalist.

    Notes:
    1. There was a high level of non-enumeration during the 1981 census mainly due to protests in Catholic areas about the Republican hunger strikes.
    2. Since 1971 there has been a large increase in the number of people who are unwilling to state their religion (during the 1991 census people were also offered the option of answering 'none' to the question on religion in addition to simply not completing the question).
    3. The number of people who were willing to state that they were Catholic represents the absolute minimum figure for Northern Ireland. Adjustments on this baseline figure are required to arrive at a more accurate figure for the total number of Catholics in the region.
    4. Various estimates have been made over the years of the 'true' size of the Catholic population in Northern Ireland.
    5. The estimate for 1961 is simply based on the assumption that 20 per cent of non respondents to the question on religion are Catholic.
    6. The estimate for 1971 is based on Compton, P. (1978) Northern Ireland: A Census Atlas.
    7. The estimate for 1981 is based on Compton, P. and Power, J. (1986) Estimates of the Religious Composition of Northern Ireland Local Government Districts in 1981.
    8. The estimate for 1991 is based on work in progress by Compton, P. and Power, J. being carried out for the Fair Employment Commission (FEC).
    9. The 2001 and 2011 Census included an additional question about community / religious background which allowed those initially recorded as 'persons with no religion or religion not stated' to be ascribed to the main religious groupings.
