Text of a letter from Gerry Adams, then President of Sinn Féin, to David Trimble, the Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), (28 January 1998)

A Chara,

At this morning's Strand 2 meeting, Sinn Fein's Chief Negotiator, Martin McGuinness, asked your representative for a bilateral between our parties. I have carefully listened to your statements on this issue and I understand the difficulties which you feel this poses for you. Indeed, Reg Empey spelt these out very eloquently yesterday in a contribution which I have acknowledged as being generous. Given the serious situation on the ground in the North of Ireland and given the democratic imperative that we should meet, I would like to formally and respectfully request that this meeting take place as quickly as possible.
