Ciphers for Military Witnesses
The Tribunal ruled that most of the military witnesses were entitled to anonymity and were thus were referred to by code. Those who were not entitled to anonymity, or did not request it, were listed by name. The following is a description of the codes used in the above listing and in the full transcripts.
Soldier A - Z:     Soldiers with a letter are the designation given by the 1972 Widgery Inquiry and refer to those soldiers who fired live rounds on 30 January 1972.
Soldier 001 - 999:     Soldiers with a number are the designation given by the 1972 Widgery Inquiry and refer to those soldiers who did NOT fire live rounds on 30 January 1972 but who provided a statement to the Widgery Inquiry (whether or not called to give envidence).
Soldier INQ0001 - INQ9999:     Designation given by the second (Saville) Inquiry to those soldiers who were interviewed and provided a statement for the first time.
Soldier UNK001 - UNK999:     Designation given by the second (Saville) Inquiry to those soldiers who where unknown to the Inquiry. These soldiers may have been recorded in a photograph or mentioned by witness. In some instances soldiers with a 'UNK' were later to be identified as having given a statement and thus had an 'INQ' code.
Officer A - Z:     Designation given by the second (Saville) Inquiry to those officers who were part of the intelligence operations of the Ministry of Defence.

Ciphers for Irish Republican Army (IRA) Witnesses
The Tribunal decided that some of the IRA witnesses would be allowed anonymity and were thus were referred to by code. Those who were not entitled to anonymity, or did not request it, were listed by name. The following is a description of the codes used in the above listing and in the full transcripts.
OIRA 01 - 99:     Designation given by the second (Saville) Inquiry to those witnesses who were members of the Official Irish Republican Army (OIRA).
PIRA 01 - 99:     Designation given by the second (Saville) Inquiry to those witnesses who were members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA).

Witnesses
The Tribunal sat for 434 days, both in Derry and in London. The Tribunal heard oral evidence over 366 days; 921 witnesses gave evidence orally (42 of whom were screened from the public); the evidence of another 1,555 witnesses was read. 506 of the witnesses were civilians, 7 were priests, 49 were representatives of the media (including photographers), 245 were military witnesses, 9 were experts and forensic scientists, 39 were politicians, civil servants or intelligence officers, 33 came from the RUC, and 33 were former paramilitaries.
