Permanent rotating exhibition:Conflict Textiles: Library, Derry~Londonderry campus, Ulster University - Nicitu, LRA base, South Sudan, 1996 - 2001
Description: Nicitu, Lord's Resistance Army base, South Sudan, 1996 - 2001 is the tenth installation of textiles within the permanent rotating exhibition Conflict Textiles collection: Library, Derry~Londonderry campus, Ulster University.

This Ugandan fabric print is an image transfer of an original drawing; one of a series within a long term storytelling project on memory supported by the Justice & Reconciliation Project (JRP), Uganda and The University of British Colombia. It was completed by women who returned from rebel captivity after their abduction by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) during the war in Northern Uganda which spanned several decades. The drawing was transferred onto fabric to facilitate its display in Derry / Londonderry, as part of the Transformative Memory International Network 2022 MemoLab: Northern Ireland (TMIN).

Two similar drawings were also transferred onto fabric. The second piece resides with Erin Baines, Associate Professor, School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at The University of British Columbia. The third print was taken back to Uganda by a Women’s Advocacy Network (WAN) member who, similar to Erin Baines, participated in the TMIN 2022 MemoLab: Northern Ireland. This print is now displayed in the WAN headquarters in Uganda.

Details of the inaugural and subsequent exhibitions are available at Conflict Textiles collection: Library, Derry~Londonderry campus, Ulster University (25th Aug. 2020 - 3rd Dec. 2020).
Commissioned by: Library, Derry~Londonderry campus, Ulster University
Date(s): 8th August 2023 - 22nd May 2024
Venue: Library, Derry~Londonderry campus, Ulster University
Northland Road, Derry /Londonderry, BT48 7JL
Curator: Roberta Bacic and Conflict Textiles team
Facilitator: Rosina Doherty-Allan
Outcome: This installation attracted many international students. The textile, with a narrative from African political violence on women, resonated with its universal topic of current times.
From a point of view of the textile technique, it differed from traditional arpilleras with its use of photocopy on linen of the original drawings and writings done by the women. 3 copies were made, 1 taken to the womens centre in Sudan, 1 to the lecturer who facilitated the process and the last remains with Conflict Textiles collection.
