Seminar:The role of textile language in global and regional human rights protection
Description: This seminar, presented by Conflict Textiles curator Roberta Bacic, builds on their recent presentation at the 2022 Transitional Justice International Conference Conflict Textiles as Counter Archives in Truth Commission Processes. This conference was virtually hosted by the Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR), Galway.

Within this seminar, which is part of the ICHR Lunchtime Seminar Series, Roberta Bacic will focus on five pieces from the Conflict Textiles collection (see ‘Textiles Displayed’ section below). The sixth piece Asociación Kuyanakuy, Ayer - Hoy / Yesterday - Today will be presented as a printed image.

Date: 10th November
Time: 1-2pm
Commissioned by: Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR), National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG)
Date(s): 10th November 2022 - 10th November 2022
Venue: Irish Centre for Human Rights, Seminar Room, NUIG
University Rd, Galway
Curator: Roberta Bacic
Facilitator: Beatrice Canossi, Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUI Galway
Outcome: The seminar was well attended and there was a high level of engagement, around 40 people participated online and in person. Students valued the chance to explore the practical application of academic concepts and were very vocal on the power of textile language. Some participants shared the impact it had on them to capture the feelings of loss and the quest for answers not only from family members but also from civil society. Students and researchers were highly motivated and open to search for ways to introduce what was presented into their work. After the seminar, some PhD researchers from the ICHR were introduced to veteran peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy, creating a space for future collaboration with her.
