Exhibition and associated activities:Textile Language of Conflicts
Description: The Textile Language of Conflicts exhibition is comprised of 23 arpilleras - some never shown before - and aims to stimulate awareness, conversations, social responsibility and peace building, in relation to human right violations in war-torn and post conflict societies. It links with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science, 4th - 11th November, 2017. Partners to this initiative are CAIN (Conflict Archive on the INternet) at Ulster University, and Conflict Textiles.

The exhibition programme incorporates two key components:

1) A Colloquium event (12.00noon, 6th Nov - 1pm, 7th Nov.) The purpose of this event is to progress an epistemology that reflects and interrogates on three key questions relating to human rights violations across society:
- How can we academically support our practice of using textiles to document, testify and memorialise the lived experience of human rights violations?
- What has been the context in which we have been able to exhibit, organize associated activities and dialogued across society using pieces from Conflict Textiles collection and CAIN’s digital archive?
- Could we formulate a model of common practice that would allow other communities/countries to progress their own textile language?

2) Interactive workshop for students (10.30 - 12.30pm, Thursday 9th November), which will focus on:
- An Introduction to CAIN, Accounts of the Conflict and the role of textiles in uncovering sensitive issues
- Overview of Conflict Textiles digital archive
- Guided tour of exhibition
- Screening of film “Common Threads”
- Discussion on key learning points

The Colloquium and workshop events are by invitation only. The exhibition is open to the public.

The exhibition launch, featuring a number of speakers and a guided tour, takes place on Monday 6th November, in the Council Chamber, Magee Campus, 6.00-7.30pm.

Commissioned by: Ulster University, Conflict Archive on the INternet (CAIN)
Date(s): 6th November 2017 - 10th November 2017
Venue: Exhibition: Minor Hall (MD106), Main Building, Magee Campus, Ulster University
Northland Rd, Derry/Londonderry. BT48 7JL
Curator: Roberta Bacic, assisted by Breege Doherty
Facilitator: Professor Gillian Robinson
Outcome: These integrated events: Colloquium, exhibition, exhibition launch and interactive workshop for students facilitated networking and debate between international academics, local textile artists, students, interested individuals and groups within the local area. Specifically the Colloquium, which was attended by a group of 15 experts (from Northern Ireland, England, Wales, Catalonia, Japan, Colombia, Germany and California) facilitated an indepth exploration and progression of an epistemology of textile language. Framing it within the exhibition programme ensured that the colloquium engaged with and was nourished by grass roots practices. A total of seventeen delegates participated in the Colloquium programme, with a combined total of 140 engaging in the exhibition and interactive workshop for students.
