Description: | La Cueca, Chile’s national dance represents the different emotions and stages of romance and is traditionally danced in pairs. These women dance alone, with sombre expression, dressed in severe black and white, wearing the image of their “disappeared” loved one over their heart. Through the dance they publically denounce the government’s actions on human rights abuses, particularly torture and detention – Articles 5 and 9 of the UDHR – in addition to curtailment of their social and economic rights.
La Cueca Sola has inspired many different textile interpretations. This piece by Aurora follows her three earlier Cueca Solas. Her 2014 version is on permanent display at the Memorial da América Latina, São Paulo, Brasil). This piece has been donated by Conflict Textiles collection to Fundación Ateneu Sant Roc where it is on display from 01 March - 31st August 2020, as part of their rotating exhibition Rincón de la Arpillera Embajadora
Cueca Sola remains an iconic symbol of Chilean women’s resistance to the Pinochet regime. In September 2019, a group of dancers; Jimena Pardo, Daniela Pérez and Manuela Mendoza and interpreters; Daniel Jimenez and Ignacio Rivera performed the Cueca Sola dance as a commemorative action in front of the Chilean Embassy, London 11th September 2019, as part of the Keeping Memory Alive workshop.
