Description: | For this banner announcing the War-Torn Children exhibition, textile artist Deborah Stockdale stitched the title prominently in red. Above she has placed Broken Rifle 2 by Irene MacWilliam. Underneath the title we see Després de les onades / Después de las olas / After the waves, the image of a woman displaced from her homeland, edging forward on her journey, clutching her baby tightly. This arpillera was sewn by Pilar Lopez,Fundació Ateneu Sant Roc, Catalonia/Spain, in a workshop titled - ‘An Emotional View of Evacuation in War time’ - during The Human Cost of War exhibition programme at the Tower Museum, Derry/Londonderry 2011.
These two pieces, stitched over different years by an arpillerista from Northern Ireland and Spain, combine here to avidly portray the purpose of the exhibition, which is to highlight the devastating impact of war on children, their families and communities.
This banner was designed by curator Roberta Bacic and sewn by Deborah Stockdale. Following the final War-Torn Children exhibition in Limavady (2018), the banner, having served its purpose, was disassembled. The two pieces have now rejoined the overall collection, leaving them free to embark on new journeys. |
