| Description: | Here Bernadette depicts scenes from the aftermath of the bombing of the Glens hotel in the county Antrim coastal village of Cushendall, on 9th January, 1974. We see the building about to collapse, as smoke billows from its chimneys and flames engulf the roof while people rush from the scene. Bernadette recalls that it briefly interrupted her schooling: “We were not allowed to go to school for several days after the local hotel that we walked past on our way to school was blown up”.
Bernadette created this arpillera during workshops facilitated by textile artist Deborah Stockdale in Glenmona Resource Centre, Cushendall, as part of the PEACEIII Stitching and Unstitching the Troubles programme in 2012-13, delivered by Causeway Museum Service and Mid Antrim Museums Service.
In these women’s workshops, she had the opportunity, over a series of weeks, to explore her memories of The Troubles; the 30 year period of ethno-political conflict in Northern Ireland, dating from the late 1960s until 1998, which resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 people.
