Title of Textile:No al femicido / No to violence against women
Maker: Aurora Ortiz
Country of Origin: Chile
Year Produced: 2011
Size (cm): 49cm (w) x 39cm (l)
Materials: Scraps of material hand sewn onto burlap
Type of Textile: Arpillera
Description:

This arpillera, so appropriate to mark International Women’s Day 2014, follows traditional patterns, though introduces techniques and materials used more for craft export and tourism than story textiles. The characters were made with felt and the banner written with a pen. Stitches have been scarce.

Aurora, the arpillerista, has placed herself in her neighbourhood of Santiago together with women from her community to demand NO TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN. The use of vivid colours initially captivates our attention, drawing us inward for a closer look where the issue they are denouncing becomes clear.
