Exhibition and associated activities: | Climate Change – The People’s Story |
Description: | This exhibition curated by The Tower Museum is in partnership with Northern Ireland Museums Council and Climate Northern Ireland. It focuses on researching, interpreting, exhibiting and engaging the public with issues connecting to climate change. The broad spectrum of issues range from: Museum environments and difficulties associated with exhibition and storage of materials; heritage buildings; climate issues evident in the north-west region and peoples’ stories. The exhibition will include a series of graphic panels, audio recordings from workshop sessions plus objects and archives from the collection.
Two pieces from the Conflict Textiles collection are included in this exhibition.
Launch: 1pm, 15th July |
Commissioned by: | Derry City & Strabane District Council - Tower Museum |
Date(s): | 9th July 2022 - 18th December 2022 |
Venue: | Tower Museum, Derry / Londonderry, Northern Ireland Union Hall Place, Derry, BT48 6AF |
Curator: | Roisin Doherty |
Facilitator: | Bernadette Walsh, Archivist; Ronan McConnell, TIDE Officer |
Outcome: | This significant exhibition, complemented by two textiles from the Conflict Textiles collection, was the first by the Museum Service of DCSDC to focus on climate change and the effects, not only on the Council region but also on the Museum and Archive collection. Funded by the NIMC it has led to interest from other Museum sites and the exhibition will travel in 2023.
It was visited by 10,474 people, ranging in ages, and including local people and international visitors to the city. A series of social media posts promoted the exhibition and the programme included a ‘Swop Shop’ at the Tower Museum in partnership with the Council’s Recycling team. The ‘Swop Shop’ will develop into a regular event. DCSDC is leading the way in developing Climate actions and future work with NIMC may result in further public engagement. |
