Film screening & talk:Following in the Footsteps of the Disappeared
Description: One World Festival 2021, which runs from 11th - 15th October invites us to stand in solidarity with those, locally and globally, for whom injustice, poverty, hunger and inequality are still a factor of daily life. It incorporates a series of online events – talks, discussions, storytelling, music, documentaries and films. It coincides with a number of UN International Days, highlighting issues such as climate change, modern slavery, gender equality, hunger and poverty, with many of the festival events addressing these broad topics. organised by the Coalition of Aid and Development Agencies Northern Ireland (CADA NI).

Conflict Textiles’ contribution to the festival includes:
1) An online film screening and talk, based on the exhibition Following the footsteps of the disappeared (2020). The post film input and discussion will give an insight into the transnational work of Conflict Textiles; providing voice and solidarity to communities impacted by the elements of conflict and human rights abuses.
2pm, Wednesday 13th October.

2) The film screening and talk accompanies the new textile exhibition, Following the footsteps of the disappeared (2021), in the Troubles and Beyond exhibition at the Ulster Museum, which explores transnational experiences of enforced disappearances. The seven textiles from Chile, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Mexico and Northern Ireland are presented together as testimonies from families and communities who have experienced loss and continue to search for answers. Whilst the exhibition is included in the festival programme from 12th – 15th October 2021, it opened on 31st August 2021 and remains in place at Ulster Museum until 19th December 2021.

As per August 31st, 15 people are allowed in the exhibiting space, though pre-booking is essential.
Commissioned by: One World Festival
Date(s): 13th October 2021 - 13th October 2021
Venue: Online
Curator: Roberta Bacic and the Conflict Textiles team
Facilitator: Jeannie McCann, Trócaire, Northern Ireland
Outcome: Conflict Textiles’ hybrid contribution of online and onsite events enabled us to raise awareness of the topic of the disappeared through the medium of film and visiting the 'Following in the Footsteps of the Disappeared' exhibition in Ulster Museum.
This reflection by an attendee at the film screening event encapsulates the richness of the post film discussion. "The Conflict Textiles team delivered a very informative session during the One World Festival. The session included powerful contributions from arpilleristas whose work is displayed as part of the 'Following in the Footsteps of the Disappeared' exhibition. It was insightful to learn about the human stories behind the textiles and to listen to global voices discuss similar issues of injustice. The session was a reminder of the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of global solidarity."
