Exhibition and associated activities: | Arpilleras: Embajadoras para el Bicentenario / Quilts/Arpilleras: Ambassadors for the Bicentennial |
Description: | This exhibition, commissioned by the Consulate General of Chile, featured 22 arpilleras.
Patricio Damm van der Valk, Consul General of Chile in New York, eloquently stated the purpose of this exhibition in the catalogue foreword as ”bringing humanity, and letting these women [arpilleristas] without a voice be heard, express[ing] their lamentations as well as their songs of hope”. She revisited the origins of this exhibition, recounting how Roberta retrieved some of these textiles from her office in London; damp, musty pieces which were carefully wrapped in a plastic bag. These arpilleras then journeyed to Northern Ireland with Roberta, appearing in several exhibitions before making the transatlantic journey for this exhibition in New York, a city described by Patricio as “perhaps the most different and diametrically opposite city from Isla Negra- the crib of these Arpilleras”.
