Workshop: | Arpillera training workshop, Enyandeni, Zimbabwe |
Description: | In Enyandeni, 26 women participated in the workshop which focused on exchanging ideas and learning from Roberta what arpilleras can achieve around the world. One of the things women were amazed at was hearing that men can also sew and that they have participated in many arpillera workshops globally. It was very empowering for the women to have someone come from far away to share with and spend time with them. Arpillera dolls were made and the women were very engrossed in this work.
In Bulawayo, a workshop took place with Ukuthula Trust and five civic partner organisations. This involved watching the film “Common Threads” by Gayla Jamison and then making arpillera dolls. The doll-making became a catharsis and team building exercise. |
Commissioned by: | Ukuthula Trust, Bulawayo Province, Zimbabwe |
Date(s): | 27th January 2016 - 30th January 2016 |
Venue: | Enyandeni Peace Centre, 28th Jan., UKuthula Trust office, Bulawayo, 29th Jan., 2016 Gwanda District, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Province, Zimbabwe |
Curator: | N/A |
Facilitator: | Roberta Bacic |
Outcome: | The groups have their dolls which they can use for a future project if they wish. The women in Enyandeni felt very empowered that they were important enough for someone to come and work with them from overseas. They had a wonderful day. We will have a future collaboration, possibly with an exhibition in Fukushima, Japan, February 2017, where we hope to exhibit a textile that reflects the starvation currently affecting people in this area.
The male staff in Ukuthula found the exercise of sewing dolls very engaging and may use the experience in the field in future.
A short film of the workshops has been produced by Gonzalo Contreras.
