Exhibition :Conflict Textiles collection: Tower Museum and Guildhall
Description: From June 2015 – December 2016, pieces from the international Conflict Textiles collection were on permanent exhibit at the Tower Museum and the Guildhall on a six months rotating basis. Museum & Visitor Service staff from various disciplines were involved in this exhibition, co-ordinated by Ronan Mc Connell, Acting Education Officer. This was a collaborative venture with Roberta Bacic, former collector and custodian of Conflict Textiles collection, assisted by Breege Doherty.

From June – December 2016, four of the six arpilleras on exhibit had recently been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, as part of the exhibition "Disobedient Objects." They remained with the exhibition for almost a two year period - travelling to Australia after it closed in London – finally returning to Northern Ireland for the latter half of 2016.

Outcome: Over this 18 month period (June 2015 – December 2016), a total of 18 textiles from the Conflict Textiles collection were exhibited. This has contributed to increased visibility of the Tower Museum and Guildhall within the Conflict Textiles collection. The exhibition raised awareness amongst all stakeholders of the potential of textiles for uncovering issues of human rights abuses and conflict through textile language. It brought in, to both venues, numerous visitors from different countries that follow Conflict Textiles. It helped provide a greater understanding of the wider context behind the stories and issues portrayed by arpilleristas and other textiles that refer to conflict.
