Exhibition and associated activities: | Meeting Chilean Arpilleras |
Description: | This exhibition features 22 arpilleras in their politicised form.
Dr. Roberta Bacic, reflects on the appeal and impact of these pieces. "Perhaps it is the surprisingly complex depth of emotion articulated by an apparently simple visual style that makes the appeal of the arpilleras strong and their language universal. I invite you to respond to this exhibit with your mind and your heart, and perhaps with stitches of your own; at this time when we mark 40 years since the [Chilean] military coup détat."
A number of events will accompany this exhibition. A lecture titled: 'Arpilleras and Chilean Women' by Professor Masaaki Takahashi, will take place on 15th September, 3.00 to 5.00 pm.
A second lecture titled 'Arpilleras that Fly Around the World' by Dr. Tomoko Sakai, takes place on 27th July, 3:00 to 5.00 pm.
