Exhibition: | Nuestra Travesía / Our journey |
Description: | This arpillera was made by a group of women called "Mujeres del Mundo-Babel" (Women of the Babel-World), from various parts of the world, who live in Bilbao. The inspiration for this arpillera stemmed from a visit by Esther Vital to "The Art of Survival" exhibition in Derry/Londonderry, 2008, which featured Irish and International quilts as well as arpilleras. Enthused by her, the group created a collective arpillera, supported by small individual arpilleras, to commemorate their 10th anniversary.
This exhibition was part of a continuous series of arpillera and quilt exhibitions hosted by the Verbal Arts Centre in Derry and curated by Roberta Bacic, from 2008 to 2013. Each exhibition, comprised of a piece or pieces created by community groups from different parts of the island, other countries, or individual women, was displayed for a number of weeks before being replaced with a new exhibition. |
