Theme

Electoral bid of Gerry Adams for Westminster election

Young Mother Ireland (usually shown as an old woman), pulls back a tricolour (Irish national flag) to reveal marchers with placards. The placards display some traditional Republican demands - e.g. Brits out - but some unusual ones - e.g. education for all. Adams' bid was successful: Adams was elected as M.P. for West Belfast from 1983-1987, and again from 1987-1992. Beechmount Avenue has been renamed RPG Avenue, RPG being the Russian-made rocket launcher used by the IRA.

Location and Date
Beechmount Avenue & Falls Road, Belfast, 1983
