The Battle of the Somme 1916
The UVF, Ulster Volunteer Force, was formed in 1912 to
oppose Home Rule for Ireland. With the outbreak of World War
I, the moves toward Home Rule were suspended, and the UVF en
masse joined the British Army under the title of the Ulster
Division. Ironically, on July 12, 1916, the Division was decimated
at the Battle of the Somme. Upwards of 50,000 men were killed
or injured in the few days of that Battle, and there was hardly a
Protestant household in the North of Ireland which was not
affected.
