Theme

King Billy crossing the Boyne, with dying Jacobite soldier on the river bank.

This mural commemorates the Battle of the Boyne, July 1, 1690, when King William III (William of Orange) defeated King James II in a struggle over the English crown. William's victory led to the Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland, and the Penal Laws, which basically disenfranchised the majority Catholic population. Since the late 1790s, the Battle has been celebrated by the Orange Order, a Protestant organisation, on the Twelfth of July. The Twelfth is the hiqh point in the unionist calendar to this day.

Location and Date
Donegall Pass, Belfast, 1984
