About The National Archives, Kew
Background
The National Archives, based at Kew in London, is "a non-ministerial department, and the official archive and publisher for the UK Government, and for England and Wales" (from TNA website). TNA was formerly four separate organisations: the Public Record Office (PRO), the Historical Manuscripts Commission, the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI), and Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO).
History
The National Archives was formed in 2003 by the merger of the Public Record Office and the Historical Manuscripts Commission. On 31 October 2006, The National Archives merged with the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI), which itself also contained Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO).
Documents Held
TNA holds a wide range of different types of documents. Of most relevance in terms of Northern Ireland are: Cabinet papers; Home Office records; Foreign Office files; and MI5 records.
