Statement by Reg Empey, then leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), about the BBC Spotlight programme on the Robinson affair, Belfast, (8 January 2010)

"Over the past few days the personal pains experienced by the Robinson family have been a matter of much media commentary and speculation.

BBC's Spotlight Programme has raised matters distinct from those personal pains - matters which are of deep concern to all those concerned with the integrity of political life and the democratic process.

It is clear to me that Iris Robinson's continuing position as an MP, MLA and Councillor is utterly untenable. She should resign all her positions with immediate effect.

It is necessary that Castlereagh Borough Council immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the leasing of the Lock Keepers Cottage and related matters.

Finally, it is also unfortunately the case that the office of the First Minister is now embroiled in these matters. The Ulster Unionist Party will study the events outlined by Spotlight and the very serious allegations that have been made with regards to the conduct of the First Minister. Inevitably the appropriate authorities will be required to investigate the allegations made against the First Minister."
