Statement by Mark Durkan, then leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), about Ulster Defence Association (UDA) Decommissioning, Derry, (6 January 2010)

"The news that the UDA have decommissioned their weapons and IMC verification is very much to be welcomed.

While they have put their guns beyond use, they must also desist from all criminal activity.

Armed gangs and paramilitary terror has no place in our society, which is why there must not be any financial payoffs as there is no going rate for decommissioning.

At this time it is important that we remember the victims of UDA violence.

Today’s news may prove small comfort for some and it will serve as a reminder for all of the utter futility of the UDA’s murderous actions in the past."
